MIT PRIMES (Program for Research in Mathematics, Engineering, and Science) is a prestigious, year-long research program for high school students with a deep interest in mathematics and related fields. Hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, PRIMES allows students to work on original research projects under the mentorship of MIT faculty and researchers.
The program is divided into four phases, beginning with an intensive reading period, followed by active research, independent study, and culminating in a formal presentation and research paper. Students typically commit 10 or more hours per week during the research phases.
PRIMES includes several branches: the on-campus MIT PRIMES for local students, PRIMES-USA for students across the U.S., PRIMES Circle for underrepresented students in Greater Boston, and Yulia's Dream for students from Ukraine.
Admission to PRIMES is extremely selective, with an estimated acceptance rate below 10%. The application process includes problem sets, essays, and recommendations, and is designed to identify students with exceptional mathematical ability and research potential. The program is widely recognized as one of the most competitive and rewarding opportunities for aspiring young mathematicians.
